This document aims to describe the proposed revitalization of the Peneleh European Cemetery as a historical and cultural tourism destination, focusing on two aspects: typography and historiography.
Opened on December 1, 1847, the Peneleh European Cemetery is a complex where prominent European figures in the history of colonialism, missionaries, technology, and arts-culture in Surabaya are buried. Physically, the Peneleh European Cemetery represents a variety of architectural aesthetics from the 19th and 20th centuries, complete with religious icons or symbols and beliefs that have acculturated with local culture.
The final outcome is the creation of:
- A physical restoration concept of the Peneleh European Cemetery, including reconstruction and the establishment of additional infrastructure such as the Peneleh Cemetery museum/gallery, a comprehensive cemetery map/layout, and
- A narrative oriented towards the historical, cultural, ecological, and artistic significance to be presented at the Peneleh Cemetery museum/gallery.
This concept combines the spirit of preserving urban historical and cultural heritage with green open spaces managed collaboratively with the community and residents as a follow-up to Peneleh as a historical and cultural tourism area in Surabaya.
